ATA Trip – August 2010

Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education will send twenty-five young people ages 12-18 years old to the American Tennis Association’s (ATA) 2010 National Tournament from August 2, 2010 through August 8, 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia.  The young people will be accompanied by staff, parents, and five young adults who have graduated from our Goodstein Junior Leaders program—a diverse group of young people who have received leadership training, provided community service, and other enrichment activities including junior instructing and currently act as role models for younger players.  This trip will also include participation in a national tennis tournament and related social activities, a tour of three college campuses, and a visit to many of the historic sites in Atlanta of the American civil rights movement.

The ATA was founded in 1919 as the African-American alternative to the United States Tennis Association which at that time did not welcome people of color.  Today, the ATA still exists and hosts an annual gathering which draws over 5,000 people from primarily urban communities across the United States of all ages and all races and ethnicities.  For young people, it will provide a wonderful opportunity to experience a national tournament, meet young people from throughout the country, develop a deeper understanding of American history and the civil rights struggle, and begin preparing more purposefully for higher education.

The deadline for applications for the 2010 ATA trip has passed. Please contact Terrance Scott using this form for more details.
